Anyone kept one in a reef tank? From what i've read on the net, seems they are either model citizens, or absolute terrors.

I always thought they were predators but being so small perhaps they'd be okay. As long as you don't have any Shrimp or smaller fish.

I myself would never put a puffer in my reef tank. If/when they die they release toxins into the water. They can kill everything in the tank. I would not risk death to my reef tank for a fish. With all the selection of fish around it is not worth the risk.

I have only owned pea puffers and even though they're small they can really cleanup fresh water snails. I assume the other puffers like snails and would clean up some of the cleanup crew.

I've had a toby puffer since i setup my current tank (last fall), and haven't had any problems. He even survived the "mystery crash". At least they are easy to catch if the green spot causes problems.

I always thought these fish were brackish water fish, not full blown salt.
Fresh when young, then gradually need more salt as they get older. Same as scats. I had 2 scats a long time ago. Did great in full salt. The puffer I'm getting is already full marine.

You really need to know the specific name to know. Some that are labled Spotted Green puffer fish as only fresh, some that take fresh as juvi and need brackish later, and others like Tetraodon fluviatilis. Be sure to get the proper name and search from there.

Iirc, the issue with a puffer fish is not related to it living, but when it dies, it releases a toxin into the water that could crash your entire tank.

I remember a guy 10 years ago or so in the hobby killed his 300 gallon reef tank from a puffer dying. He had it set up for almost 10 years, then everything dead just like that.

I've heard similar stories about when boxfish, seahares, and anemones die. But I also read stories about absolutely nothing happening as well. There must be variables, no idea what they could be.

It also depends on the species and how toxic they are. Sea apples are toxic as well and can kill your tank.
My tank is worth way to much to risk it. With so may inverts and fish around to choose from it is not needed to keep some species.

20 years ago I put a box fish in my sump as a temp spot till the tank I was going to put it in was done. It was malnourished when I got it and it didn't survive the move. It died and I got it out soon after but the damage was already done. I lost a school of Anthias that I had just got 2 weeks before that I paid $600 for. Also 5 other fish and two cleaner shrimp died. After that I learned my lesson and never did it again.

I like puffers, and it's coming from the same person I'm getting my pearlscale butterfly.
