Correct, it wasn't the tank that came from Mark, that's my 125 gal and it is wonderful.. not sure what lesson everyone is referring to but, if its the leak trust me I wasn't thinking of doing a video when there is water going on my carpet... anyway, the tank was returned today, again a big thanks to Zoomster (Steve) for doing an awesome job.. tomorrow it is going to be painted, then the plumbing stuff will be ordered..going to go slow on this one.

I didn't think so Mark, I didn't want to mention any name Buddy, Now you went and screwed that up. I just knew of the tank she got from you. OK she must of gotten another tank that leaked.

I always fill the new tank with freshwater first and leave it filled for a few days with a heater. So I can test it first for leaks, look for scratches and get the tank temp stable. If it passes the leak and scratch test I then add salt and an airstone and leave it 12 to 24 hrs. The salt mix if you have a good brand, will become stable by then. The airstone helps stabilizes the PH so it is well worth adding. You can normally tell by sticking your hand in and if it doesn't feel slimy to touch it is ready. If it does feel slimy it is not ready. Or test it.

that's what I did with the other tank, it was running with fresh water for almost a week, added some salt on Friday, tested it on Saturday and added more salt and that's when it started to leak.. I think when I was in school I should have hung around for the biology class instead of going out for a smoke..never realized that salt water was heavier than fresh..

That sucks. You never know with tanks. Yes salt water is heavier by a little.

Sometimes it happens though, empty it out, it dries up, gets moved, then the seal lets go when filling cause it was dry for a bit, maybe being older is a factor?, then once filled the seam lets go even more and Bam, leaky tank... Its good that you have the new one started already heather... Good luck..... :)

the tank wasn't that old, the sticker on said that it was built in 2012..I hear you there is no guarantee on buying used..Jewel, it is common for a tank not to leak with fresh water but will with saltwater.. heavier water puts more stress on the seals..

thanks Sam, and Eric, the tank ran fine for a week no leaks, I added the salt gradually over a period of 2 days when it started to leak..I have always been told that salt water weights more than fresh because of all of the minerals and that the density is heavier..

It likely was a crappy seal and just moving the tank may have flexed it just enough to weaken it. That's why I didn't get that used 220. I figured that move would likely fail it. It's a miracles after all lol

I have never heard of that in all the years I've been doing this for

I agree totally, But yes buying a used tank is always questionable, I've been very lucky over the years, I've probably had 20 tanks and only 1 was new and I never had a leaker. Even the one I bought that was broken, took it apart, put it back together and t didn't leak either.

I did lose 80 Gallons of fresh water into the basement but that was a Canister Filter that the seal went on it, power failure, water started back flowing, the seal let go and 80 gallons later, Got the dreaded call at work. LOL

I gallon of fresh water weighs 10 pounds, 1 gallon of Saltwater weighs 10.25 pounds at 1.025sg So 100 gl of Fresh weighs 1000 pounds and 100 gl of Saltwater weighs 1025 pounds. That 25 pounds isn't going to make the difference of a seal letting go or not. But it leaked and your floors got wet and life goes on. Good luck with your next set-up. I say Foobar
