no matter how you do it, its a horrible job...I have always drained the water first and then scooped the sand/gravel out.. when I get to the bottom I put the small bucket in the tank and use a dust pan and clean it with a soft cloth to get the rest out..
just think of the weight in the shop vac and lifting it to empty..good luck...

14 gallon, 6hp shop vac = 100lbs of sand out of my tank and under my back deck in less than 20 min. That's how I roll

Yeah gonna go planted discus. The freshwater gods seem to like me a lot more than the saltwater ones
