i have had a 6+ inch nem fit through the egg crate stuff and get shredded. agree that it will be plugging off very quickly if it was gogin to save a nem. plus you will have to double your flow to make up for loss due to sponge

my experience with using all hydor powerheads is any restriction on flow through the guard and they start to run backwards sucking in water. a guard made of acrylic would probably work best but may look really ugly. maybe make a few from window screen and have a spare set to swap out for cleaning. just make sure what the screening is made of will be tank safe.

So far the bubble tip hasn't really moved. But the pink tipped just couldn't keep his grubby tentacles out of them. He ended up paying the ultimate price.

No they are not low but the pink tipped was bigger than a softball and six inch tentacles and those guys can climb the glass

I tried the sponge Idea a while back thinking it might work. Reduces FLOW and the sponge just gets full of gunk that is not passing through the power head.
