OK - another thought. I have a wood canopy that matches my stand, but the inside is only 9" off the water. I assume I will need these more than 6" off the water, so mounting inside may not work.

My thought is to basically cut a hole (or 2 holes) in the top of the canopy and sink the fixtures 1/2" into the canopy. The fans would have all the air they want, and the light would be 9-10" off the surface. Any concerns??

Seg I know you have seen me looking at going T5 and it's simply out of curiosity. . However I just realized I took off all the lenses off both fixtures lol. That's why my lights seemed dull. I have put them all back on and it's a massive improvement in shimmer and brightness. Mine are mounted under my canopy as well on my diy bracket.

I got some 1x1" aluminum angle and just made a bracket that sits on the sides of the tank and the led fixtures are sitting on the top. They can slide freely left to right and won't slide off. FYI they sit about 4" off the top of the tank.

I went with these guys:
Chinese Blackbox LED Proof Group

Got 2 16" timer models. Communication was a bit dicey, but they came in. The programming on the timer is kinda brutal, but I won't be changing it often. Lights looks good and the price was right (under $200Cdn including delivery and all duty per unit).

Still haven't set them up yet - hoping to do that this weekend. May be awhile before I have a proper review on them.

Oh for sure that's how eBay people get you lol but I'm talking about the group buy on face book so I think shipping is included at 99$ for a standard light with manual dimmer 165w-3w and 135$ for the timer controllable ones with remote and then 185 for the true ramping ones

Ya, I got the $135USD including shipping. Duty on 2 was only $35Cdn, so about $200Cdn including all tax and shipping each. Seemed pretty good to me, but we will see what the corals think

Rob - did you change out the plugs? All of the black boxes I have seen have the straight plugs - those 90degree ones I see look to be a much better use of space
