I only have a Radion xr15 pro, maybe I need to rethink the clam idea if LED's are not good enough to keep them :(

Radion pro is more then enough. 90% of the LED's are more then sufficient to house a clam, unless you have some weird type of tank dimensions that is 40" tall or something. Reef keeper could of lost the clams to a number of factors, it MAY not of just been his LED's.

putting that in prospective ..... do we need to have a big tank for a clam???

I would say no. Clams are relatively slow growers. A lot of people complain about the smaller ones dying but that could be because they were not quite at that photosynthetic stage of there life. 2" and above and it is pretty much a guarantee that no supplemental feedings are required, although every inhabitant always does better with more food....I'm included :)

Sent you a PM regarding clams.

For care, I find they are relatively easy to keep. They do need good stable parameters of the big 3 (Alk, Mag, Cal), but are fine with higher levels of nutrients. Lighting is important and you will want the same kind of lighting that you would use to grow SPS corals. You can do supplemental feedings to increase there "happiness" but it is not necessary for survival.

Hope that helps.

Dave

Bigshow can you send me this pm as well .... I would be interested

thanks

It's really hard to get a good shot of my clam. It's decided to snuggle up between my zoa tree and anemone island.

@EricTMah i had that clam under led for two years before you and you have had it over a year now lol must be huge. the one that died was from bigshow but the massive leak and tank switch took a toll on him before you got it or you would have both still lol.

in my experience clams are very easy to keep most of us use reef roids or something similar and they seem to love it. i have never needed to target feed the problem with clams is getting one that is healthy. there should be no damage to the mantle anywhere or chips in the shell. with lights on wave your hand over the tank once shaded they should react almost instantly if it doesnt react thats a good indicator on poor health. pretty well long as mantle, shell and colour appear good and it reacts immediately to light you should have no problems..... if something seems off on any of those points just pass on that one

any fish or inverts that have anyone had issues with? I have heard rumours some fish will nip at the mantle and irritate the clam and stress it out

thanks, I read that lawnmower blennies can nip at the mantle. I have one and it likes to sit on rocks and kiss the glass but never had it touch anything other than rocks.
