OK for a bit of an update. Things took a slight turn for the worse LOL apparently I must have left too many of the spikes in my finger and it has gotten severely infected. I was at the ER today and the infection is starting to spread out my arm. They gave me some strong antibiotics and marked where the infection is I have to watch it for the next 24 hours to see if it goes up any further. I'll keep you updated

Uuuu thats not good at all hopefully those antibiotics do the trick.... the tips are barbed like porcupine quills thats why it hurts so much they cut in and tear out. Hope you get better.... a few shots of rye allways helps immediately after it happens lol ive pulled a few fish hooks out the arm and leg thanks to fly fishing on a windy day but luckily no prickly bastards yet

The doctor thinks the infection is under control so that's a good thing. After all of this I can't stress enough that we need to be careful in our tanks. This is the first experience I've had like this after many years in the hobby. It has sort of freaked me out a bit Lol

Hate to add fuel to the fire but a couple of years ago I got stung by a big bristle worm (I still like them)....no big deal...took the spines out cleaned it up but it stayed sore and gradually I got a white area surrounded by red and it continued to hurt so I went to the doc and when he examined it and opened it up there was a huge cavity under the white area. It had become necrosis and suddenly he was seriously talking about potential amputation. In the end the affected area was cut out and it healed up just a small scar left but a serious scare.

I think many times it's actually what's in the water compared to what we got stung by. I had an interesting thing happen that shows the toxicity of our water also. I had a 150 gallon tank set up for a while that I purchased previously and the owner was running tons of bio pellets as his main source of filtration. When I shut the tank down it took absolutely no time at all for the water in the tank to turn down right foul. Like within a day the tank was totally dead. Usually this takes a couple of weeks to reach the stage. The only thing I can think of was that there was so much bacteria in the actual tank water from the bio pallets that it poison the water almost immediately. So now imagine putting your hands in that fish tank with all that bacteria growing; if you have a cut it's a possible infection.

Yes, so much bacteria in the water. I have inside information on why Walmart got rid of their fish tanks. A worker contracted tuberculosis through an open wound from catching fish.

Amazing what little creatures in sw do for their own survival. It seems that almost everything is poisonous in some way. Funny enough I have not seen 1 bristol worm in my new setup. Had lots in my old biocube. Take care of that finger glad to see its healing.

I got a bunch of these between my fingers not too long ago, was brutal getting them out but I used forceps designed to get pieces of metal out of eyeballs surgically (benefit of having worked in the OR for years. I remember thinking "oh those would come in handy one day", and they did). Kind of glad I took the time to get them all out, I'd hate to have a mangled mess of a hand like cliff

(sorry cliff, you know I wish you a speedy recovery!!) :)

Funny I got a minor sting yesterday from mine as well, I'm just as foolish and have never used gloves, I've got em just don't use em and I'm reaching into my tank almost daily.

So this got me to thinking, I know that the bristle worms are good in your tank, but at the same time, I have a pile of them, what eats them? How to remove of them without chemicals?

The finger is doing pretty good it's pretty much healed up now. I did lose all the skin on the top of the finger also which was weird. The infection took a long time but it is also cleared up. This whole experience has got me questioning the usefulness of these little stinkers also
