I'm thinking of selling my 30g FOWLR and 14g cube, and upgrading to a 40g.

I have some questions as far as over flows, sumps and hoods go. Should I get side or bottom drilled? Hood or no hood? And would a 10g sump be a good size?

All answers are greatly appreciated!

Go with a 50gal (36x18x18) or a 75gal(48x18x20)
The extra 6" front to back makes a world of difference when doing aquascaping. Trust me it'll be worth it!
As for your sump. Go the largest possible that you can fit in the stand. You can always use the extra room for equipment or a fuge. I run a 48x18x24 for my sump and now I wish I would've gone 5' or 6' long sump.

I agree with Eric, I have a 55g sump on my 125g and wish that I had gone bigger..there is a 55g on my 75g and I love the higher ratio..tank to sump...

I went from a 75 to a 40 breeder. I have a 20 tall sump below and have no issues with space. I just keep it simple I skim and do weekly large water changes. Hardly any algae and it didnt cost a fortune to stock the tank :) I have a centre back overflow with one main and one backup drain, no hood and 4xt5ho. 8 love my tank and wouldn't have done anything differently. Bigger isn't always better IMO. Giant tanks aren't for everyone.

Hey little Reef keeper!

The bigger you can go on your sump the more you will appreciate it. I guarantee if not right now, eventually.

As for your over tank drains and overflows, I believe you said this set up will be in your bedroom?
you want dead quiet? Go with a bean animal if you can. I have had every type and now my first B.A. drains and it is the quietest. I could not believe how quiet it is.....IMO.

Dead quite would be nice, but I'm fine with a little noise. Is a bottom drilled just gravity fed, as in water just overflows into a pipe down to the sump?
