Look up nassarius snails.

They will devour anything that is dead/dying.

I have witnessed them devour a whole clam that was slowly dying.

So your clam, died from something (water quality, disease, who knows) and the snails cleaned up the mess for you!

snails will eat dead things including fish and clams. hermit crabs will eat perfectly good clams once in a while.
