You'll always get some water back flowing into your sump when power is out. Depending how low your return lines are in the tank and if you drill a siphon breaking hole. You're probably looking at 5-7 gals roughly. That's why most sumps you don't run them full to the top to compensate for the back flow.

You can use check valves. But I've never trusted them as they can get clogged quite easily.

anyone recommend the Tunze Comline doc protein skimmer 9011 it's 16" tall and rated for a 290g it would fit perfect in my stand and with room too spare

I've never seen or heard of it (i'm sure most people have though), but I'm intrigued! Hope someone knows if they're any good!

Tank update
Have been really busy but i did fill up the tank 2 weeks ago and is cycling well. I went ahead and found a used protein skimmer the model is deltec apf600 which i picked up last night and have no clue how to set it up. I was thinking of just running the skimmer externally for now and later on doing a sump. I have a eheim pump and just wondering how i can set it up with the skimmer.
