It's starting to sound really complicated and the learning curve high. I thought these devices were intended to make life keeping a reef easier. But with programming and software updates and all the stuff to remember doing and if the schedule gets messed up you have to do everything over again. I would assume a power outage would really make this unit worthless.

I have heard dosing units going awry and od'ing everything in the tank.

I think i''ll save my money.

In a power outage, everything is useless. LoL. But it saves everything and there are ways to back it up. It has made reef keeping easier for me. I have never heard of an Apex being the cause of an over dosed tank, missed doses yes, but not overdose.

I thought someone on another site said that the doses were larger than they had been set for and over time it had increased in size to the point that the dose damaged their corals. Some type of doser might have been an contributing issue. I will see if I can find the post.

That doser will draw very little current so I would put it on one of the relay outlets and program it to be turned off if your pH gets over 8.4, that way if the doser fails and tries to OD alk the apex will shut it off.
If you sign up with http://www.reeftronics.net/ you can see and use other peoples programs and reeftronics has diagnostics and monitors your apex to verify it is communicating and will email you if it's not.
It's a little late now but myself and others here, i'm sure, will help with some programming. Just be patient and get things up and running one thing at a time, once it is set you will be worry free. I would start with programming the heater.
Also the apex forum has a lot of info.

Programming is not lost in a power outage and firmware updates are not difficult either if you follow the instructions.
You can save and backup your program within the Apex so if you screw something up you can retrieve it.
I have my head unit on a battery backup so it can email me if the power goes out, also reeftronics emails me that they lost communications with my apex if the battery backup fails.
Programming is not for everyone but if you can copy and paste then you can get it done.
My Apex has made my life keeping a reef much easier, I have everything but my return pump running on it, my return pump runs 24/7/365 so it's not on it.

its just over whelming at first alot of learning ... i sometimes forget ... i only been back in the hobby for 1 year ...

It is super overwhelming man. Don't feel bad. I just want all the basics working and to have an understanding of what does what. Then I will start bugging people for programming help. Right now, I want to smash my face off the wall with the WXM and my Radions. One of them does it's own damn thing. Just get basics like heater and maybe light programming on and off to get used to the interface and go from there. Also a tip, if you are trying to use the APP for Neptune, don't. Just link the web page and work from there.

well of course i dl the app and yes it doesnt work argh .... I feel the same way then i gotta bug you guys or bug unibob to come over blah .... I am slowly gettin there ... I love learning and love this site and hobby so at least its fun@!

Don't use the app. It is out dated and a PITA unless you really know what you are doing with port forwarding your router, static IP etc...

Just use the fusion site on your phone. Bookmark it and add it to your screen. That is what I did

Even the Apex forum support guys don't use the app typically. They recommend Fusion on your mobile device.

True the app sucks, but the fusion site kicks me out every time I leave the page. I have to sign in EVERY time I want to use it even if I left it just 5 min ago. PITA!

I have the same problem, wonder if it's the phone or maybe a setting on the phone.
