from the article...

gfo can drop your initial alkalinity levels about 20% after 36 hours

Right.... but anyone running sps is already dosing alk, or at the very least testing for it...

I'll say this... anything that GFO removes can be supplemented, but you can't just add a supplement that gets rid of phosphates.  Put it this way, after 15 years of crashes, slime and failure, I'll take my chances with the GFO  ;D

I run gfo 24/7 an my alk sits at 9 all day long. I 2 part dose but manually and only as needed. My ca sits at 460 and alk 9. I use kalk in my ato and so far have good results. I'm a heavy feeder so my glass usually needs cleaning every three days but now that my LEDs are being built I'm hoping to see a reduction in algae. Or so they say.

I will agree that ALK has to be supplemented.  This is the first time I've heard of GFO as a culprit, but a proper reef tank has to have stability in the 'the big 3'  or you're not going to have success.

The only thing that would help this hobby more, would be stay-in-the-tank probes for phosphate, Calcium, Alk, and magnesium.  I assume they exist but cost a billion dollars each.  However, those are on my dream list.

Isn't there some salt mixes that have higher alk and cal. In them?  Like reef crystals ...so when gfo pulls yur all and cal low. ..so let's say yu do a water change yur putting the levels all back in again and keeps it stable?

I am lucky anything grows in my tank at all.....I thought that alk what one of those animals that Zakk is always looking to hunt on the side of the road while on a frag trip.

I think it all depends on how much GFO and what brand is being used...
Then, according to this article it only affects alk levels for the first 36 hours when GFO is added.

Just good to know if alk levels are already low and GFO is changed, it could make the level even lower.

I'm becomming a GFO spokesperson  ;D

All I know is there would have to be a catastrophic failure in my tank, directly attributable to GFO for me to ever stop using it.

I only use BRS Hi-cap GFO, maybe a cupful in a phosban reactor, changed monthly.

I do dose ALK and CALC, about 50 ml per day (in ~140 gallons).
