Are You Using Carbon ?

Yes but any voltage going to ground will pass through everything in the tank, so if you had stray voltage your fish and corals are feeling it.

Sure diet is very important, but ich is a parasite, with a life cycle. It doesn't just appear. I use a grounding probe, if there is stray voltage waiting to go to ground, it will go through you if you complete the circuit. Its just safer for you to allow stray voltage an easy path to ground. Those guys working on high tension powerlines are crazy.

Yes ICK is a Parasite but if you were to watch or watched a fish that ends up with ICK, its behavior is quite stressed especially the Hippo Tang it will show signs of rapid breathing and very shy, sometimes in the top corners or hidden under a rock, then bam the next day spots. Well the main thing or factor is STRESS. When stressed the immune system is low and that is when they will attack. Just like Lions, Wolves and Sharks, and just like Cancer. Colds a Flu.

I know this is being side tracked. I use Carbon 24/7 and be trying different ones lately, and as of right now I am running Purigen from SeaChem and I am very impressed so far. I like the thought that it does not remove Trace Elements.

Im with @Salty Cracker

think of a bird on a electrical wire, they have the same electrical potential as the wire but its not a problem.

The tank is fairly well insulated from "ground" since its typically made of glass that is an excellent insulator... plastic piping is non conductive. With no ground there is only the potential of current flow between equipment if shit is broken. ground the tank and you now have a completed circuit and the current flows.

not taking either side on the HLLE debate but electrically I think this is pretty accurate.

What happens if the tank is not grounded, and shit breaks, and it will. Then you stick you hand in the tank and complete the circuit to ground yourself.....shocked reefer, or dead, just a thought. I work with power everyday and I respect it.

I have no urge to re-kindle a debate that raged for quite a time on RC. If you feel better with a grounding probe, go for it, there is absolutely nobody on this earth that will stop you. I ended up taking mine out, I guess because I'm a reckless rebel with a death wish. We will miss Salty Cracker when he's gone to the Big Al's in the sky.

Wow weird swing in thread. I also done think anyone will be seeking in and installing a grounding probe on your tank when your not looking.lol. we are all free to practice any reef keeping policies that we want. .. obviously we live in a country where we can voice our opinion. That's all that was happening, good luck and happy reefing :)

Well if you prefer to do it then that is your decision. I am just trying to show the other side, If you are doing it for safety well then you will have to do it properly and use a GFI. All I know is I played with them for years and the worst was when I ran VHO and you could watch as you put the probe in and out the Fish reacting, nowadays things are not as bad I strived to replace as much as I could with DC low Voltage, I only have 2 pieces left that are AC 1 power head that I may change but it's a Cobalt and are fairly well made. the other is the Heater and even that I use the 3 prong Finnex Element into a Blue Line Controller so if something goes amiss the circuit in the unit should trip or the Breaker should trip. But then again what happens when Lightning strikes the Oceans and it happens all the time 24hrs. a day. The other thing is what if there is stray Voltage on the Ground in your home ( which is quite common ) where is it going to travel, all along the ground throughout the house so inturn you may be adding Voltage to your tank.
Anyhow if you do it for safety then read up on it and do properly but if it is for Stray voltage I would not bother. Just make sure if you're in the Basement on concrete to where your running shoes and never barefoot, be there and done that.

yup, my x got blown across the room when he stuck his hand in a tank with a broken heater. He wouldn't go to the hospital, was pretty grey for a while. He was lucky it wasn't worse. Fish were acting funny, I don't think he's ever done it again since

I dropped an extension cord into the sump when I was setting up the tank to test the GFCI. Worked perfectly. I have replaced the outlet once since then, the "test" button wouldn't work so I knew it was bad. It tripped when I was away on vacation, which wasn't great for the tank, but probably good for the house. You would hope that a broken heater on that circuit would trip it immediately...

I swear someone told me you had an incident where you got shocked real bad. I figured it was true just by the way you act and go about your day.
