I am thinking of getting a bug reservoir built for my ATO. If I build it higher then my sump once my pump comes on, it will syphon the whole reservoir right ? So my question is, how can I stop that from happening ?

You could tee a small by-pass and send some water back into the reservoir keeping it above the waterline and it will break the siphon when the pump shuts off or use a solenoid valve.

I always just had it level with my sump , but why not build a gravity ato with a float switch in place ?

I use the tunze osmosilator.
When my top of tank is full it is higher than the water level in my sump so I use the hose that came with it to make a loop down to the floor and back up over the edge of the sump. I had no more back siphoning after I done that
I'll post a picture once I get home
