Just got through reading the whole thread. Your tank is stunning! It is something I have always wished I could accomplish with mine but I just haven't been able to with all the time I have put into the seahorses. If you ever do decide to go with seahorses maybe we could trade ideas. You could let me know what I'm doing wrong with my reef and how to fix it. (I'm not sure "doing wrong" is the right wording since LPS seems to do well but I can't get my zoas to grow well and would love to have more of them) I'd love your input sometime.

i had no luck with zoa's, Frank Hoff of Florida aqua farms told me to use 1 cup of quality activated carbon per/100 gallons half that changed every 2 weeks. It removes a lot of the mucus's that other corals slough off and it worked I actually have sps's right beside leathers beside zoa's and they all grow nice. Also they don't like my halides so they off to the side a bit bright but not killer bright. just seemed to work for me.
by the way still going to do the horses just have to wait till spring a bit now .

And if you can keep them alive fine but want them to grow more i got rapid growth after started dosing iodide ( rapid as far as corals go lol)

At the moment I am doing vodka dosing to get the phosphates and nitrates down. If I add carbon into the mix that will be too much carbon, am I right?

Spring works, I will still have some I imagine. :)

Sorry if I'm hijacking your thread barebottomcouple but I have to know... for both of you, what version of iodide are you using? I Googled it and found potassium iodide, copper iodide, zinc iodide, sodium iodide, silver iodide... you get the picture. As a nurse I have access to lots of liquid iodine but from what I read iodide is when iodine bonds with another element so I don't imagine I can use my liquid iodine for dosing. After this question I will start my own thread:)

i love the vodka dosing method I have used it a lot in the past and really works. I just moved my big system in oct and after moving always get the nasty spikes with stirring sand and rock. so my nitrates went to 20 ppm and dosed for 2 weeks and got it to under 1 and a week after that 0.I still ran my carbon not sure if that right or not with vodka. never really thought about that. from what I know I think that activated carbon absorbs certain organics like yellowing of water and coral mucus. and the carbon in vodka is more of a bacteria stimulant. but I not sure that is just my thoughts.
I use Kent iodide and its potassium iodide.. to be honest I have no idea which one is better for what or even the difference it makes in the tank the kent was on sale.lol

I like the aqua vitro line I use eight.four and fuel for when needed. kent was on sale for 2.99 a bottle so I bout 8 bottles.

ya i started with kent but i could never keep things stable so i switched to the whole aqua vitro lineup and has been going great. Im sure it was something i was doing wrong but i like aqua vitro for the fact you can dose everything within minutes of each other and no adverse affects plus the capful or two beats a 1/4 cup anyday lol never seen an additive bottle last so long. I can only use a half dose of the fuel because i add polyp booster with it and both can cause a massive algae bloom if overdone.... made that mistake once lmao
