What would be the proper method since im sure its leaching out of my rock and sand. Would i eait for the gfo to take the levels down to 0.00, and wait for it to creep up a bit and change out again or would i change it out as soon as it hits 0.00, and keep changing it out when i notice a rise?

the lower the po4 in your water the more po4 will leach from the rock and substrate. the gfo is good untill the po4 starts rising again.

What I did was monitor it and was changing out every week. Water changes right after change out. stir up top level of sand and then empty tank half way down and replace 30-35g water change. My Cyano is actually 80% gone and it have turned dark brown instead of red.

And just for fun I setup an ATS 2 weeks ago and alot of Cyano and algae is forming quite nicely. I know it ain't much but rather see it on the ATS then in my DT.  I also notice that I do not have to clean the glass as often  like we are talking every 6 to 7 days.. and still not alot.  Be patient my friend... It almost drove me nuts. but a big factor for me I didnt realize, I think some of my cyano problem was shutting down a 20g refug when I finished the other side of the basement this winter.  never dawned on me until the other day.....  possibility

It took me ~4 months to get everything out of the rocks and substrate using hi-cap GFO.  I just kept watching the numbers and when they started to go up, I swapped out the GFO, it was once every 3 weeks or so, then I went to every month.  Worked like a charm.

been doing that for about a year now, works great, I use a rio 400 gph pump cuz the maxijets don't last, I use home hardware lye crystals, 3kg for @ $23 and a BRS media reactor.

Been regenerating mine for a while...use 2 tlf 150's just swap the reactors in and out, never open them or touch the media except when I t starts to get too fine then I scrap it and start fresh.

I think if you read the thread on Lanthanum / SeaClear, you add it in drops but you have to catch the precipate downstream the RC thread discusses various methods for catching the binded P04 in filter sox, etc/. but yeah sump would be nice to have coz it'll be pretty tough to do that without it.

Here's another thread on lanthanum. No need for a reactor. I think I'm going to use this method instead of GFO. just needs to a doser that goes into the overflow. the 10mm filtersock will catch the precipitate. no need for reactor!  a 32 oz  bottle will treat 10,000 gallons!  woohoo!

I'm going to try the Phos Down, I run a cryptic tank of live rock and am going to run the drain thru a 10 micron sock and drip with a Drews doser into that sock. I just ordered the Phos Down and socks from Reef Supply Canada, The socks weren't cheap but it's the only place I could find them.

What were your levels before you added your GFO?

And no it is not normal for the GFO to deplete in a day.
