I need advice for a bean animal. I have a 75 with a corner overflow, it has two bulkheads the ought the bottom as a durso. I know I should have three bulkheads but If i was turn it into a bean which is more inportant. The trickle or the emergency ?

If I understand correctly, your trickle would kinda act as your emerg. You are going to need a trickle line to make silent.

I thought that also about the trickle, it could act as my emergency. I didn't know that the trickle is what makes the syphon quiet. I think I will try it, run a syphon with a trickle and have my return come over the top. Unless someone knows how to make a durso quiet ?

The trickle picks up what the syphon line doesn't, allowing you to adjust how fast your water drains. I have an emergency line, which has never actually been used. In the event you get some type of blockage in your syphon line, you trickle should turn into a syphon.

The bean is an evolution of the Herbie adding the third line as a failsafe read up on the Herbie for tips on the two line system.

Make the larger bulkhead the trickle/emerg and the smaller one the siphon line... if they are both the same size then pick which ever and pinch the siphon line back a bit with a valve, that way the trickle is still larger than your siphon capacity. = peaceful sleeps and vacations

a word of caution, if the trickle gets plugged you may not notice it then if the drain gets plugged you have a flood, i think i would us the emergency and the siphon.

but don't I need the trickle to be able to pick up the excess from the syphon, or would the emergency just do it anyways?

You throttle the siphon until a tiny bit is running through the trickle. It eliminates the need to fine tune the siphon. Then with a vented cap on the trickle, if the level rises and covers the vent, it will run full siphon until the level drops.

No matter how many safeties you have you could always plug them all....

I think that's part of the reason you only want a tiny amount going down the trickle, so there's not enough to get stuff growing in it...

I find fish, turbos and urchins in my overflow pretty regular, I have screens on my siphon and trickle, nothing on my emergency.

I've got my siphon and trickle about 1/2" from the bottom of my overflow box. Nothing has been able to squeeze in or block them.

Hope you got my reply to our conversation, hopefully I did not confuse you any. A trickle line is absolutely needed for a bean or herbie overflow. A third hole in those corner overflow will get awfully tight and may impinge on the rule of thumb about not drilling any holes within too close a proximity to others.

I wish the tank was empty. It would be so simple. I did get your response reefgeek, thank you. Like you say three holes is way to tight and probably shatter. I was thinking of drilling the side but it is way to much to risk with it full.

i have drilled holes with 3/4 full tanks and used the power head for cooling and lubrication on the bit
