Re: The beginnings...

Also it is a 1" durso ,  through a 1" Bulkhead into 1"pvc piping in the cabinet...

Re: The beginnings...

And could it be because I have a line  t'd off the drain for the fuge?  I have the ball valve closed now,  but I didn't see an improvement

Re: The beginnings...

Most Durso's are 1.5" and go through a reducer before the bulkhead. . . I think that is an important part of the design.

You could try a vent at that 90 to allow some air to escape, or changing the angle so that it doesn't just freefall that last little bit.

I couldn't quiet my dursos and ended up going herbie with the returns coming over the back and I wouldn't have it any other way now.

Re: The beginnings...

I'm thinking Herbie also...  1 question,  where do you get the strainer for the end of the 1" drain pipe?  And do you put one on the emergency 3/4 pipe too?

Re: The beginnings...

I don't have strainers.  I used the durso as the level dictating pipe. If I just had a straight pipe, it would gurgle.  Herbies don't have an "emergency" like the beananimal.

You have two pipes in each overflow - one is full syphon with a gate or ball valve to control the flow.  The other is a durso that just has a trickle of water going through it.  The Durso standpipe dictates your water level.  If the syphon gets plugged, the durso can handle all the flow.  When it does, it makes a crap ton of noise (like you have already) alerting you that something is wrong.

I want this thing silent!  Since its located in my living room.    My wife will appreciate it!

Re: The beginnings...

I'm thinking cut an inch off inside your sump.  It's too close to the bottom of the sump.

Re: The beginnings...

Took an inch off...  Marginally quieter...  You might be on to something..

Also,  maybe I should change my durso to be 1.25 "..  That combined might be the quick fix

Re: The beginnings...

The only problem with a herbie on your setup is that you have a manifold, the trickle down the durso (I still call it an emergency) drain will vary greatly all the time because of things added onto the manifold. For example the reactors slowly clog up and get slower throughout the week, forcing the durso to handle more of the draining. This could be a problem if it can't handle all the flow from your main siphon getting clogged and the clogged/slowed equipment on the manifold. It all depends on how much flow your durso (emergency) can handle.

With full siphon setups you only what the drains to be submersed an inch or so under the water in the sump so it can purge all the air, taking this idea and reducing the pipe size may solve your problem without redoing everything. Or angling the drain, I can see this helping to an extent but their may still be splashing when it hits.

Re: The beginnings...

I've updated the whole design today..  Stayed with a single drain,  used all of the above I've received.  I'll post the new improved video!

Re: The beginnings...

Next step,  I need to quiet the durso.  It's too loud!  I can live with the light trickle in the sump,  considering when my Skimmer is on the vibration from the pump is louder anyway!

The bulk of my noise now is the drain itself.

How far of a drop should you have from top of overflow to inlet of durso?

And Boga,  I wish I could get that picture,  can't because it's against the wall now...  I'll see if I can get in there

Only pics I can get right now... Lol.

But I have like 4" water drop from top of overflow.  I don't think this is right!

Re: The beginnings...

4" water drop is too much IMO. I only have ~3/4".

Also one trick to reduce the noise is to add ~3" pieces of air tubes in the top holes. It acts like a muffler.

Re: The beginnings...

3" piece of tubing..  Check!    I'll try that next.

Overall I think I could live with the noise level of the trickle in the sump.  Afterall I understand it may quiet slightly after I dump the fresh water and go to saltwater!
