I have tried NPX bio pellets from two little fishes and Nitraguard. Nitraguard cubes is the best out of the two I found. The bomb method works best no need for a reactor. It took about 6 weeks for them to fully kick in for the bacteria and the nitrates to start dropping. You can tell when they are working at full because they darken up. Every few months I just add a little more as the cubes get smaller. I also run GFO for the phosphate. I found the bio pellets took a long time to kick in. A few months at least and didn't do as good of a job.

The pellets were good for smaller tanks but if you have a larger volume of water they didn't work very well for me. I love the cubes. It comes with the mesh bag and all you need is a air pump and air stone. I put the air stone in the bag and then put the cubes in. Then pull up the stone a little so it was off the bottom and surrounded by the cubes. I found that distributed the bubbles the best. Then just plop it in the sump. Done. No more having to clean the reactor when the water slowed and having those pellets sticking to everything. No more clumping.

I originally tried dosing with MicroBactor7 for the first week to see if it would speed things up. But it is not needed.
