this is great. It shows that with the right science we can continue with the aquarium trade on a more sustainable basis.

I hate when people Anthropomorphize fish like the blue tang and call them Dory
This is the problem with modern movies. Dumb everything down to sell more useless junk. Gotta get the movie, bed sheets, lunch box, curtains, toys, and on and on.

"But Daddy how can I be a Disney princess if I don't have ALL of the stuff. I'm just going to die...."

Guess I'm just weird, I like documentaries. Educational, without the painfull text book monotone. Or the regurgitate on paper essay format. If I don't like what is on, I change the channel.

a bit off topic here but on another site they are saying that a very large chain of fish stores ( not mentioning names) that 90% of the fish that they sell are farm raised and captive bred...it would be interesting to know what they mean by farm raised...,

farm "raised"

They normally capture them at an early juvenile stage so that there is minimal effect on the habitat. Although, that is argumentative statement as when they are small, they are used as food for larger fish, so removing them still affects the ecosystem there. I honestly do not think that farm raised is a selling point for me. They are still captured in the wild with typical fishing methods. That in itself is a whole other topic as well.

that's kind of the what I was thinking...but, some ppl think farm raised is the same as captive bred...
Lots of misconceptions and discussions out there about it. Basically anything other then captive bred was taken from the ocean and affects the ecosystem. Just prettier words make us feel better about our choices. Plus anything raised, farm or tank, will cost more due to facilities.

Define "COST". "Cost" as in price, or "cost" as in the degree of harm to our oceans and planet... Another debate... I prefer captive bred. Even if it does cost more. At least they are aquarium climatized and eating aquarium foods. As you said Pretty words, so we don't feel guilty for supporting companies, who care less for the environment than their profit margin.

fyi some captive bred arent truly tank bred. some captive bred and farmed are raised in large sections of ocean that are leased out. those floating nets are considered net raised and are the worst when it comes to parasites and disease.

I hear that about "farmed" salmon. Not only that now they are growing GMO salmon too. Look out, here comes a whole bunch of new species.
