so I've been losing some of my acans over the last couple weeks. Though maybe it was a bacterial infection or something. But they would look healthy one day and then the next all 5-6 heads on one colony would be completely gone. This has happened to 3 small colony's now. I woke up two mornings ago the see a colony the was open and looking good the night before, completely bare with the urchin sitting on top. Can home last night after work and he was munching away at a few heads on another bunch!......he is now in the sump

What kind of urchin is it ?
Not normally coral eaters but the long spine variety can make their way through coraline algae !
I keep rock boring, pin cushion and tuxedo and have never seen any of them chow down on corals
Sorry to hear about your experience

My long spine eats blue clove polyps, leathers and sinularia. I really like him, though. He's just hungry!
I stock blue clove just for him. And I let him eat the leathers. I'd like to keep him off the sinularia, though. Either way, he's a keeper.

Maybe he was going for the coraline on the plugs and slicing them up on the way by. Those are very fleshy corals and his boney mouth could just be destroying them on his search. Still sump him of coarse. Dont want him cutting up anything else.

To top it off, I got "stung" by him while moving him to the sump. Swelling in my finger has finally gone down.

When I was in the mayan there was a good beach at the resort for snorkeling, but when you go in the water, you realize there's spiny urchins everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I had water shoes on, but got hit in the hands a couple of times. I figured if I ever went back I'd bring kevlar gloves. I wonder how many people at that resort step on the things, the hotel (of course) never warns anyone.
