Don't try anything drastic.

Your tank is new and its just part of the various blooms it will go through over the next two years.

Just keep siphoning it out daily and let it run its course for 6 weeks. It'll disipate. on its own as the various bacterial cultures re balance.

Your tank is clean so its not a nutrient issue. You can try some scarlet hermits who some times consume it.

If u get really fed up. Hit it with chemiclean. Last resort option but works.

My water is definitely stable. I check my levels once a week and am keeping everything in good order. My lamps are only 4 months old so I am good there as well. I do wonder sometimes if the Purple Plus lamps help with the growth of cyano because of the red spectrum available... I will just keep plugging away and siphoning the crap out of there. I am going to add a filter sock every time I stir up the sand bed going forward.

Doubt its the bulbs.

Like I said just let it run its course. Keep hitting it with the syphon regularly.

Do you run GFO?  I can't remember

Yes. I run a BRS Dual Reactor w/ Carbon & GFO. I had some PO4 issues right at first and used the GFO which drastically helped with that so I just continue to run it now.

Hmmm.  Did a big fish die in the tank in back maybe?  Just gotta wonder where the cyano is getting its food from.

I keep praying to the cyano gods to keep my tank clean, so I'm always really interested when someone 'doing the right things' has issues.  It would be good to figure it out...

Cyano doesn't need a whole lot... I've got 0 NO3 and 0 PO4 and still have some of it... it doesn't take much to live off of, and can be stubborn as heck to get rid of it, especially if you are feeding it with biopellets.

Some real nice peices there Derek. Keep up the awesome work. Once you get everything figured out completely this is going to be a real eye catching tank.

Looks great Derek...the tank is really coming along.  Your colour and health is great for such a young tank.  That Turaki from Bill might be a.exquisita...but its tough to tell.  I definitely dont think turaki though.

As for the cyano, I think letting the RO/DI get above 0tds can be the cause....or letting crap build up in the sand too long.  Also bio pellets are a factor IMO.

Keep us updated....thanks for the honorable mention, I love seeing my babies grow up.

Keep up the collection, I will be stopping by for frags for sure ;)

I've been hoping that you were going to update your thread soon.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the cyan, keep doing what your doing. Your tank is still relatively young, so its just doing its thing, as it matures.

Now post up a FTS! ;D

I often wonder if my inline TDS meter is accurate or not. I should go out and buy a handheld just to be on the safe side. I run the Vertex RO/DI unit and it says 0 TDS when I make my water, however, the colour changing DI has fully turned brown... I do have a 2nd DI compartment that I added to my unit just for some re-assurance and it is pretty well all brown as well now. I will buy a TDS meter and check it out.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I will give the sandbed a good stirring again tonight and then take a picture. My kids went out and bought me a Red Sea Star last night for Valentines Day. Hopefully I can keep it alive for a while as my tank is still pretty young. Only time will tell....Slow dripped it for a good 6 hours so it was acclimated nicely. If it dies, my kids will be all over me about it.... I'm still getting grieve about my Powder Brown jumping to its demise 5 months ago.  :?

I wonder the same about my water, TDS says its 0 coming out but the resin has gone from blue-green-browm.

I just did a resin change - mine was a brown colour for a good chunk of time before my TDS crept above 0.  I've got the inline TDS meter and handheld, both are always the same or 1 ppm apart.  I'd just keep an eye on it and once you see 1 swap it out.

I keep a handheld unit where I do up my ro/di water just to be sure. My inline shows 20 or so in and 0 out, but out spikes at 10 or so when I startup so I figure its reading something, but I'm in the same boat...my resin turns brown before its used up. My last batch lasted over a year before output went up to 1

[/quote]Sorry Derek....I wasnt saying that was your problem.  It sounds fine.  Personally I dont use colour changing resins as they cost more and I just go on my TDS meter.

So, after reading about tdb320reef's reef setup and how he uses MB7 to help combat cyano issues while running bio-pellets, I decided to give it a try myself. I have been dosing MB7 for 2 weeks now as per the directions on the bottle. I have also been stirring up my sandbed every week and blowing off the rocks, which I have all ready been doing every week. Low and behold, my cyano has all most completely disappeared! I figure it will be completely gone in a couple days as 90% of it is gone now!! I don't know if it is coincedence or not, or whether turning off my skimmer everyday for 4 hrs while I am dosing helps the nutrient levels in my tank to balance everything out, but it worked!!!! No more cyano and a nice bright white sandbed again. I will take a picture tonight and show a before and after shot. Again, not saying dosing the MB7 is the sole reason of the cyano disappearing but I can definitely say it has helped! I am going to now drop to the maintenance amount and keep dosing going forward. There has been no ill effects towards any corals or livestock that I have seen.
