how old is the tank?  what is the TDS of the ro water you are using? If its not a new tank and your doing lots of water changes adn they are not helping..9 times out of 10 I would say its your source water.  That is of course assuming your correct about it being diatoms.

A lot of people have good luck with reef crystals, but a lot of people do not.  I used them once and had a huge outbreak of diatoms, never again for me.

If you're really unlucky, they could be dinoflagellates.

Do you use GFO?

I have used Reef Crystals from day 1 and have had no real issues with it. Not the best salt in the world, but I have yet to have any problems with it... As for diatoms, definitely take a picture so we can check it out. How long has your tank been running? When you test for Phosphates, you always have to remember that even though your test is showing 0, the algae itself feeds off phosphates so the levels are contained in the algae itself. Running GFO is your best option. Also, what kind of clean-up crew do you have? Mexican Turbos, Trochus, Cerith snails, etc. are all good helpers to clean up the bloom. If your tank is still very young, diatoms are a very normal occurance in the cycling process. The algae will eventually starve itself out of existence. You just need to be patient. Still GFO and a good clean-up crew will speed things up.

how old are the bulb in the t5 unit ? I would have to agree with blob on this but could be few different issues . Start with checking your ro source and go from there post your finding on the tests

look for nassarius snails or a sand sifting star fish, those will keep the sand stirred up in low flow area's and that should help.

Just guessing from the description, sounds more like a brown cyano.

In either case, a tank only being 4 months old will have issues like this

We can speculate all we want..but really need pictures to give proper advise

2 sand sifting stars might be too much, i think one is the way to go

I been using the gravel vacum thing when I do water changes but its a pain cuz I have all mt frags on the bottom still. Will the star eat the shit off of the sand?

If your tank is under a year, you will get cycle out breaks everyone does.  Check your TDS, get good lights (ATI) run GFO and keep up your waterchange and you will be fine.  I was right where you were and was freaking out.  Lol

When I started my tank the first thing I got was the red slime  Then I used chemiclean.  Then it came back again. Then used chemiclean again. Then  no more red slime then got the diatoms on sand.  Then did nothing just vacuum every water change  Then boom gone  then a month later started using GFO
