Classic debate throughout all forums is whether LFS pricing is fair. In my opinion their pricing is spot on for what they do. They are a business TRYING TO MAKE MONEY AND A LIVING. Tell me that you wouldn’t sell something for $300 instead of $50. I’m all for a business making money, they take the risk, they made the investment, they should get a return.
I also strongly support a hobbyist, as that is my current position. They deserve to get a return on their investment as well, $50-100/month for the 1000s-$10,000s they sink into the hobby is nothing. My tank I evaluated at around $7000 including livestock, that’s a substantially large investment for anything. I only think it’s fair I see $50/month in frag sales from my display.
With respect to the business side I have experienced similar struggles selling lighting systems, freshwater stingrays (pm me if you care for details, we were the exclusive retailers of stingray biology freshwater stingrays in Canada for years before the market was saturated by piss poor quality Asian imports) and more recently acrylic aquariums. Few years ago we used to supply the lighting systems to a lot of stores in and around the GTA. These were beamswork lighting systems, and the mars aqua 165 watt as well as a few other models. We were selling them well before the time they became popular, around 2013. We sold upwards of 10,000 units. We still have some residual one offs that are nearly impossible to sell due to the vast quantity of cheaply made lighting systems available through amazon/EBay etc. The hobby works both ways, we once sold them for $250 each now can’t even sell them for the $50.05 import price. Rays once demanded $2500 each, pairs for $4000, now you may get $800 for a BD pair. That’s why I personally left that side of the hobby.
My stand on it is make your money while the hobby allows you to make your money. There will be a time where the cash flow stops. You will rarely hear me bitch about the price of something if the quality is there. I only complain when I buy a $100 frag and it’s the size of the white edge on top of a finger nail. That’s when I get pissed off.
I would have had a very large post secondary debt if I didn’t hussle my ass off in this hobby.
