It seems that my corals are always fully open before the lights even go on in the morning, and by end of day/lighting period they seem to mostly all be closed up. Could it be too much light that they are getting?

Well it isn't on timers, so 4 21" power compacts come on at around 8am, two 10k and two 50/50. Then the lights go off around 7

i think a consistant light schedule is really needed for a reef tank.

maybe run those 50/50's from 8-7 and have the 10K bulbs come on at 10-5 for a few days.. see how the corals react to that

Will def try that duke. Thanks.

Another question...  How do lights on in a room affect the tank?

I don't think they do... The lights in a room are too far away to have any impact on your tank. Plus, going through the glass, etc. will diminish the par value quite drastically.
