Favia growth

I bought this favia a the frag extravaganza in Toronto in July:

It looks like this now:

It has about 12-15 new eyes.
I'm still new to this so I was wondering - is this good growth, average, or slow?

A couple months ago, the red parts that were over where it was cut turned white.  The new eyes then showed up on the other side of the white.  Those white parts are slowly turning green.  Is that normal?

Thanks

Looks like christmas favia. They grow at a med. speed. You can feed them at night when there tenticles are out. I feed mine frozen brine shrimp.

This one usually eats pretty well during the day.  I give it a taste, then it extends its tentacles and it takes a lot of food.
It loves Big Als mysis.  I like it a lot more than PE mysis.  Nice and small and the cube is mostly shrimp.  The filaments seem to be able to grab the Big Als mysis a lot better than other foods too.

What do I do with it now?  It has grown over the edges and is curling under the thin rock its on.  It's worse on the side you can't see.

Don't judge my embarrassing algae problem..

Should I leave it in the sand, or glue it to the rockwork?  I was hoping it would grow up more than out.  What if I push it into the sand more?

Also, when you glue a favia to your rock work, are you pretty much saying you'll never frag it (as it will encrust onto the rock), or do any of you have a trick to get it off?

Thanks for your suggestions/advice.

I don't think the Favia will grow up very much....it will likely keep encrusting out wards. You can glue it onto a bigger frag disk/plate. You can glue it onto your rockwork too bit it can become tricky to get back off again without damaging the coral a little bit....I have glued things onto rockwork before and still been able to easily pop it off using a scalpel.

I too have a War Coral and was wondering the same thing, will it grow like a Chalice? or does it need something to encrust over?

Favia and war corals will encrust. If you want that favia to grow on the rock, epoxy around the base so it has something to grow onto. If there is a small gap between the rock and the plate it is on, it will not be able to grow off the plate.

I suggest breaking a smaller, nice shaped rock and mount the plate to it and let it grow on the small rock. This way if you ever want to move it, simply move the entire rock.

I grew mine on a dead clam shell, now it's just growing outwards on the sand.  It DOES bud off small nuggets of itself now, which I find roaming around the tank.  There's a second colony of it growing now on a rock a foot away.

Cool.  I'm going to try that then.
