Re: Question of the day - July 12

use both 100 and 200 micron,
100 is best, but I have to change these ones every 3-4 days
I find 200 micron can last alot longer without being changed, but they will let noticeable small particles through into the sump.

Run both my drain and reactor output into my sock

Bought a nice sock holder from IA that mounted nicely inside my stand.

Usually rinse with hot water between uses or soak in bleach and rinse to really clean them

Re: Question of the day - July 12

I use 2-200 micron mesh inside 2-200 micron felt socks.  I did try 100 micron, but as teebone says, every 3-4 days they can be overflowing, and letting -everything- into your sump, so I went with a pre-post filter setup.  The mesh are a lot easier to clean out snails, worms etc, and the felt seems to do a better job of the smaller particles.  I just swap them out every week or so, with the pile of spares I have.

I do find that when I first started using them, I was filling them up every week, easy.  Now that they've been running for 6 or months, they last a lot longer, even brand new ones (I get the BRS ones), so there must be a good long term reaction to the water from prolonged use.  I don't think I'd run a system without them.

I run them during start up or when I'm moving rock around.  I find they are just a pain in the ass and don't change my water clarity at all.  Plus I got animals in my sump that eat the food that comes down the overflow :).
