I was thinking the exact same thing.

Our power was out monday night for 4hours.

Small price considering I just spent $450 on frags at the show.

Figure this thing would be good to run my mp40 and my heater for a good length of time with no issues.

ya but a bag bouncing around still gets re oxygenated everytime they are moved and buildup is slow, 2 winters ago we lost power for about 12 hrs and despite my best efforts within 2 weeks everything died..... the lack of water movement and no light or heat ticked off somethings nitrate spiked followed by ammonia and nitrite levels then cycles started and i was at the start of a long losing battle sigh but got a 125 after :)

just remember to match your wattage needs with a generator or your fridge and tv will use it all

I have had many power outages but luckily I've been or my wife has been home. We use our hybrid suv as our generator. I am planning on doing a battery backup.

I laughed when I read your last sentence. I was thinking man I'm addicted to this hobby, why would I need to power anything other than my tank if the hydro went out.
T.v, fridge heat??? Didn't even occur to me lmao.

Generator is the way to go, but most of us not doing it till it's too late... I believe is on everybody TO DO list.:D
In the meantime a UPS running just the Powerheads might do it for short outages.

We'll this is a 1500 watt and I'd rather lose the food in my fridge before my sps
Car battery's are still at least 50-60$ a piece why rig up some Mickey Mouse contraption when you can spend 200$ And your set

I have had many power outages living in lucan..... Most recent was a power outage due to a faulty mj400 which caused the gfci to trip.... No power on tank for almost 24 hours....
I do have a honda 120v 20a generator but no one was around to start it. I lost all my tangs.... But no main coral colonies.... Only the frags (because they were out of water). I've noticed that it is actually the fish who suffer the most from power losses. The lack of oxygen and temp change is not good at all for fish..... My tank is very heavily stocked and when I testes ph it was below 7 :(
A generator is a must have IMO... Plus you can use it to power other things too :)

This is what I spent the day doing. Put a pad in for my generator and ran the cord into the house and hole to be sealed later. This will feed a four circuit sub panel I'm about to install that's fed from a spare 40a breaker freed up from my range. In between the generator and the sub panel I will have an isolation switch. Power goes out turn off 40a breaker, start generator and turn on isolation switch and my two aquarium circuits are powered. I did a full load test and my system consumes 1080w so I know I can turn down to bare minimum and run for a while. Don't forget to put fuel stabilizer in your gas. This is so simple for my wife to do but I will post instructions by panel and colour code and label switches. I work nights so this is imperative. Next is to build a enclosure (rubbermaid) right now but I will make it look like a dog house. Life of an electrician

Ok I am now ready for a prolonged power outage. Installed the panel this evening and moved the circuits over new sub panel. So now all my wife has to do is flip two switches and start the generator. My insurance policy is in place and may I never need to use.

Been looking for a generator for awhile now, to bad that canadian tire one is so under powered (cause the price is great) it Would run the tank but not much else,

Want something that can power the tank, fridge, furnace and a couple of other critical things like interent and TV :)
