Are we still only sitting at 5 orders?  :(
Heres hoping for a good discount.

rjjs, what are the dimensions fo the hood for your tank and depth of the tank, might be easier to get and idea. I think it would be great to DIY a hex hood filled with LED edge to edge.

I am replacing my 24" fixture with a 72 LED kit that I am putting on a DIY 30" fixture. But my tank is 36" across.

Maybe 50 LEDs. 2 X Aquarium 24 LEDs DIY Dimmable Kit

My suggestion would be the 72 LEDs DIY Dimmable Kit. They come with dimmers, so you can just turn them down, which would extend their life as well. Or you can add and remove LED's as needed for the perfect colors.
From there, make your own heatsink in a hex shape to fill your whole hood. That would give every inch light.
I am at work right now, so I can not throw together an image of what I mean.

There are a lot of other members here that would have some great feedback and suggestions, this is just my 2 cents.

Well I should ask... is it a FOWL tank or are you growing corals as well???

Edit: just read some of your other posts, looks like you are running with some corals. I would go for the 72 LEDs DIY Dimmable Kit personally.

I would like to bring one line into light. "Cree will become a significant supplier to Bridgelux". I have not completely researched it, but pretty sure that brings them up to equivilent status. Read more below....

Press Room

Cree Settles Patent Litigation with Bridgelux

[sub]Cree and Bridgelux Sign Supply Agreement[/sub]

DURHAM, NC, DECEMBER 29, 2008 – Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a leader in LED lighting, announces that Cree and Boston University have agreed with Bridgelux, Inc. to settle the parties’ patent infringement litigation and to dismiss all claims and counterclaims in the suits. As part of the settlement, Cree granted Bridgelux a license to the Cree and Boston University patents at issue in the litigation, and Bridgelux agreed to pay a license fee and royalties. In addition, Bridgelux and Cree have entered into a supply agreement under which Cree will become a significant supplier to Bridgelux. Other terms of the settlement are confidential.

“We are pleased that Cree and Bridgelux were able to resolve the litigation through a supply agreement and licensing arrangement,” stated Adam Broome, Cree vice president-Legal and general counsel. “This resolution underscores the importance of intellectual property in the nitride LED market. We look forward to working with Bridgelux.”

Morning guys,

I don't mean to Hijack a thread or anything, but It definitely concerns anyone of you guys about to buy LED's

I'm REALLY interested in what you guys plan to be using for a HEATSINK ?

Where are you buying them locally? (if you are)

I really didn't want to order the heatsink online, and have been trying to find something good to use locally...

I have my LED's already, I just picked up an 8 foot length of aluminum 1inch "U channel", from HomeDepot for 14$.  It's in the window and door section, it's being sold as decorative moulding.  They had aluminum square tube as well (more mass) but because the tube is sealed I thought it might end up heating up more, and not cool as efficiently with a fan.

I stopped by ForestCitySurplus first, and they didn't seem to have anything useable (that I could find), when I inquired they said they used to have the nice large 12"x9" heatsinks... years ago.

So... Do you guys have any better ideas before I start cutting this stuff down and mounting my LED's to it?

I pretty much on doing the same. I have found some other DIY heatsinks where they did the same with good reviews. Krazykarl here used a less heat conductive metal and his 'heatsink' is cool to the touch. I have a few extra PC fans and coolers that I plan on using, but everything is just in theory now.

Look at some reef brite led light bars. Ad yu can get a idea how to DIY  There's is almost same as using U channel  and reef brutes use plastic clear glass to keep salt build up on the LEDs

Something unexpected came up last week that tapped me out.  So unfortunately I am going to have to opt out of this but for now.
