Hair algae gone wild

I went away for the weekend and my rock work looks like a mosh pit at an 80s Metallica concert with everyone whipping their hair around.

What's the best way to help control hair algae, be it types of snails or a type of tang.

Mexican turbos to remoce the physical algae, GFO to keep it from coming back.

May help a little more if we knew about your tank set up, age, parameters...

I wasn't doing anything before to control it. Maybe the curtains were left open and the sun added to the problem? My tank is about 3 or 4 weeks old so it is still maturing. Also noticed that my nitrates are higher than when I checked last Thursday.  I will look into a GFO. The tank is a 400 gallon acrylic with a 265 gallon sump. How many GFO units would I need?

Sun light wont grow algae if there isnt the nutrients in the water to grow it and it doesnt grow algae any better than the artificial light we use.

400g tank....wowzer.  Is this your first saltwater tank?

Are you using rodi water? What are you parameters? For the tank only being 1 month old, that's pretty fast to have a massive amount of GHA growing.
You got a massive tank!! The GHA will look like a rock concert! ;)

That tank is huge.  You probably got everyone's attention with that stat :)

Since you're in London, if you want to come by and I'll show you a GFO setup, although I'm at 150 gallons.... your volume is a -tad- more.

Agreed though, for such a young tank, I can't imagine why there would be so much Hair, was it used rock I assume?

Are you using brand new rock or rock from a previous setup? Might be your rocks leeching out phosphates.

It's a mix of old cured live rock or so I was told plus new rock and dried rock.  There is around 350lbs of rock in there and I tried to cut some corners. That's my bad.  It is my first salt water tank. I jumped in a little too deep too fast I think.

You aiming for a fowlr tank or a full blown reef?
Tank size is awesome , everyone starts small and then upgrades so you prob save money going big right away lol

You'd need a lot of dead stuff to pollute 400 gallons... You must have had a massive die off on your live rock.  Maybe it wasn't as cured as you think.
I hate to ask, but do you have any fish in there that you have been feeding?
