I was looking at a goby of somesort something sand sifter I don't want anything to large no more them 3-4" I have a40 gallon and would maybe like to get a white n red pistol shrimp but wanted a hardier sand sifter then a 2 spot which I had before and they are extremely hard to keep :/ any ideas

I got a tiger goby from Aquarium by Design, very healthy, awesome price and I have never seen a fish work as hard as he does, I will never be without one going forward.. I had a bad cyano in my 75g and he cleaned it all up....

I love my sand sifting goby. Healthy, happy and oddly enough, one of my daughters favorite fish. Other then that, you can look for nass snails.

If you are just looking for something to stir the sand up, there are also sand sifter starfish.

To big for my tank I would like a gobie of some sort but on the hardier side

engineer gobies often pair up with pistols but not always gold heads are great but can get 8" mine is fully grown so if you think that would fit id say thats a great option and very hardy
