I have had good and bad over the years dealing with fellow hobbyist. I was wondering is there a sticky on how to conduct a transaction.

So people have done this many times and are pretty good at making the entire even smooth. But there are the few that make things over complicated or just down right uncomfortable.

Can you do a step by step how one should handle a transaction?

Thanks,

Great idea... felt like posting something similar recently, but was still sour from the experience lol, I have a feeling the advice will fall on deaf ears for those who need it most, but still a good idea.

Some things I think that would be generally helpful to a sale:

If you're selling:
Post a picture of what you're selling
Post an asking price as opposed to asking for offers, especially if you're expecting to get a certain amount.
Post your location if it isn't in your profile

If you're buying:
Do any price negotiations BEFORE you meet. Once you arranged to meet you need to show up with the amount agreed upon.
Make your offers via PM. Only ask questions that the rest of the forum will benefit from reading in the for sale thread (how big, what color, etc)

...I'll think of more lol

Frankly, this seems to be common sense to me. As such, might as well be a rule for the forum.

One more thing to add. No shows. I have no tolerance for them, and without the courtesy of at least a txt, there is no acceptable explanation if you ask me.

As for trying to negotiate price after showing up for whats been agreed upon. I have a "policy" with people like that from dealing with Kijiji. Don't have the money to the dime, I shut my door and leave you on my porch.

How about if you agree on a day and time a week in advance keep that appointment! If you can't please let the other party know ASAP

If you are selling a setup and the person is coming from out of town to pick it up. Please have it all taken down and ready to be moved (yes you have to confirm)

If you are selling a fish ( please catch it before I get there and have it in a container bag or something.

If I am purchasing coral, fish seller supplies the bags or container unless specified

If you are selling something sell the complete product. don't sell me the light without the hanger (if you have it) don't sell me half of something(unless specified in ad)

if we are to meet at a certain location at a predetermined time (please be there at that time) if not message me

If we agree on a transaction please put your real name in the communications ( I don't want to have to press your intercom in the apartment lobby asking for Sexyfishie)

I think we all differ on how we sell things lol it's pretty hard to make rules on stuf like this for example Some of these points can backfire on a seller. I NEVER put a fish in a bag b4 a buyer gets to my place. I may put the fish in the sump but putting it in a bag stresses the fish like crazy and likely the fish will loose all coloration when the buyer comes for it. Second if the buyer is delayed or a no show u will have stressed that fish for nothing.

exactly Cliff, you can't bag a fish a head of time but, you don't leave it in the tank and say "oh, I have to tear down the tank first" you put a fish somewhere safe that won't stress it out..its called common sense or if that's what you have to do then advise the buyer ahead of time and give them the option of standing there or not..

hello, is it not just common sense and courtesy...
Unfortunately common sense isn't so common. Neither is courtesy. I used to just take all my frags into Stace for store credit when he was open as I got tired of dealing with people wasting my time when selling privately. That being said, I've also met lots of great people in this hobby, you just need to have patients for the idiots that waste your time as well. Some things will never change!

Uhh... That was a bit random...
Don't recall any of that. Our exchange was a positive one though, I'm referring to a different interaction with another member, lol.

basically, i say put up with it, the no shows, the low ballers, the last min trades etc etc.

If you cant put up with it, then buy new, and trade your old stuff in too stores as well.

this is coming from a 'seasoned' Kijiji 'dealer'. ahaha

if you want discount items/ less than retail there's going to have to be a draw back of some sort.
( otherwise everyone would do it)
