Interesting Observations On Flowwwww

I Had an interesting observation tonight when I was messing around with my mp40s. I have 4 of them in the opposite corners of the tank on the ends. My older mp40WES I run in reef crest at around 70%. My 2 new quiet drives are a different story. I was running them both in tidal swell, which is basically super random. It creates some waves, runs continuous for a while etc. I don't have them synced so the flow is more chaotic. These I run at 90%.

I never have used pulse before, for fear of stressing my tank.

So here's what happened.

My 2 were still in reef crest at the QD was running in total swell at 90%. I turned my other QD to short pulse at 80%, with 3 second pulses give or take. I have some millepora and acros that really haven't had much PE, but they've been growing.

Within a few minutes of the pulse going on, all the corals started to get some PE. What's the deal with that!?

if you have good chaotic flow its pulling up anything that settled in the back eddy currents with the older setup. so they are getting a snack... howany times turnover do you get in your tank? i use to go by the standard turnover but have upped mine to extreamely high around 50-60x turnover and boy are things alot happier.

Perhaps they were getting too much direct flow and adding the others helps jumble it up. THEY HATE DIRECT lol i found that out the hard way years ago. I also found that when i was lacking pe in acros and millies when everything else is doing great i was usually skimping on my amino acid supplements a bit or missed a few. I know kevintran started to get super crazy pe after he started using amino acids. It went from average pe to shag carpet pe lol

The tank is 220 gallons, so I'm running the equivalent of around 10000 gph of flow, plus my return which isn't even 1000. Just under 50x I guess. I'm going to be replacing my 2 mp40 Es with QD to get some extra flow out of it. Everything certainly seems a lot happier since I raised it up. My sand bed is pretty full of sps right now. Another week I can start moving them up into the rock work.

@BigReefer start off half dose with fuel.... you will notice mag cal and alk will start to be consumed a little more then up to 3/4 till same thing then full. if you cal mag and alk consumption doesnt start increasing dont use more fuel thats when it fouls your system

@EricTMah @reef keeper i also use the h2o amino acid supplement/coral food soak.... 3 drops a day in my 90 gal... selcon is good too but pricey... big als has the h2o stuff. It works for enriching my seahorse food as well

I'm using a calcium reactor, so the salt doesn't matter so much. My consumption is already pretty crazy. I just want more growth and pe

Alot of people lack strontium and dont even test for it yet it is key for growth. The strontium and other trace elements in fuel will help growth alot and amino acids are like a metabolism booster so things will consume even more faster which will help growth and pe.
