Most definetly there is an underlying cause like you said. Having 1 clownfish in a 1000gallon aquarium is overstocking if you look at the big picture. Over the years we have had additions to the hobby that let us push the limits a bit more and more all the time. LaCl has been around for awhile, but I do believe it is going to be one of those items that let us push the limits with our tanks when done correctly.

No feathers ruffled here, my fishes fins are up...but I think they are just hungry and happy to see me.

I dosed lanthanum heavy when cooking my rocks. Phons dropped from .57 to undetectable. Cost 100 bucks in product but no headaches

This is a good application for this product.

Fully packed reef tank people
need to error on the side of caution.

Absolutely can crash your tank in minutes. Monitoring is the key factor. I run a dosage once a month. The liter bottle I mix up will run about 3 days into a 10 micron sock.... slowly
My po3 is virtually undetectable

I had a HUGE po4 issue with my rock, from using untreated tap water for years..when I did the 125 (properly) I used the vodka treatment, non evasive and cleared up the issues within 2 months, I saw results within 3 days, I also used filter socks to catch the debris ..is there an algae issue or just the po4 readings...
how did you dose the vodka Heath? There is an algae issue, lack of maintenance and rock that has been in the system for years.

Unless you are experienced with dosing, I would NOT recommend using any in your tank. There are far more to go wrong then to benefit.

If you have a large system, then I would be more inclined to look at this route.

If anyone wants reef safe LaCl...I sell bottles of FOZ down. I will however take no responsibility for how it's used.

I have never used in my tanks, but do plan on using once I see more phosphates present.

It does amazing at stripping phosphates from old dirty rock.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad I posted the question, you've given me a few options to pass along, questions though,
how much vodka to dose? possibly the vodka could eliminate the hair algae without him having to strip the tank and cook the rock? any thoughts?

I'll pass on the info about the Phoz down as well, the tank has been neglected, life gets in the way, it's a big tank over 200 gallon I'm sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated :D

Vodka, vinegar, sugar, bio pellets are all forms of carbon dosing to grow beneficial bacteria to uptake po4 and no3.
they are really good at controlling no3 but not so much for po4, you usually need to get the nutrients down then the carbon dosing can help keep them down.

Brightwell Aquatics has pretty good guidelines on the container as to how much to use to drop the po4 .1ppm, you should drip it in a 10uM filter sock which can be hard to come by, I bought 25 online, I don't know where pulpfiction1 got his, maybe he could elaborate.

I just used the good old fashion Smirnoff's vodka and when I was using it there were no swings in the N02 OR NO3.. not saying its a cure but it did work extremely well for me. I saw the results within 3 to 5 days, totally amazed at the crap sluffing off the rock. Took about 3 mths or 2-26 oz bottles and some really good water changes..
