My diy led's are on there way.
Should I worry about putting a splash shield in to protect them.
Any suggestions
thanks
mike

salty has them, i do not, what i did was use ss marine grade wire and good silver electronic soldder, no issues for the last 15 months here.. i occasionally wipe the lens off with a microfibre cloth.. if you want to borrow my iron, i have a smaller hobbiest sized pen that works great for detailed work like leds.

How high above the water line are your lights?

+1, height makes a big difference. Mine are 8 inches off the surface and I removed the splash guard and there is no spray or salt creep on them at all. Whereas when they were closer to the water the splash shields would get quite nasty...

Mine are maybe 12" off the surface and yeah I had tons of problems before I switched to the splash shields.  Same thing, I just used thin plexi from home depot.  I think I have had one burn out in 12 months, compared to 20+ before I used the shield.  Of course I'm not using marine wire, just POWER FIST wire.

Curious, I don't have a problem at all. Maybe mine are higher then.

Mine are only 4 inches off the surface and I don't have any protection and no problems since I put them up 10 months ago.  I'm planning to add acrylic one day.
I guess it depends on how jumpy your fish are..

I'm also in a 100% enclosed hood.  I think if it was open it would be different.  Mine for sure had salt creep all over them, probably just from evap.

Maybe that's it, my hood is open in the back... I bet if I look at the wall behind the tank my wife won't be happy. :-X
