fishit link said:First off a neon goby only has a life span of about 1 year and are hard to get i have never actually seen a neon goby in a fish store from hear to toronto that's not saying they haven't had them but i have seen many many cleaner wrasse in stores.... hens the hard to get part but nor hear nor there.. now this article you just posted is not a good source to be pulling your info from eather it said cleaner wrasse are impossible to keep in any tank other than a 2000 gal well that's bull shit i must be a magician than be cause according to that statement of incredible research its magic mine is alive and Ive had 3 now not one has ever jumped the tank and i successfully kept 2 out of three that's a pretty good percentage compared to what your article said witch is 100 percent mortality rate and plus i know many others with wrasse alive and well... but again there is nothing wrong with a neon goby but they are not guaranteed to clean short life spann and hard to find.
and yes it is provven that ich is carried in tangs you say your self your fish ich from time to time well ich only has a life span of about 8 weeks max so if you have not adid anything in say 8 weeks and your fish shows a couple ich spots where do you think they come from must be the magic again lol the dead come back to life ha ha ha
quarantine and hypo salinity great idea y not just lock your self in a closet for god knows how long when you get sick and well i don't know what to compar it to but lets say.. cut your oxygen down <specific gravity> and will see how stressed you get that's my thought on that stuff by the way guys nothing personal just a debate no hard feelings!!!!
No hard feelings ever....but now the gloves are off!LOL!
Deep Breath in......Neon gobies live about 1-2years which is a far cry longer than "most" cleaner wrasses survive in captivity. The link I pulled is just 1 of thousands of links I could inundate you with regarding professionals opinions that wrasses be left in the oceans (it was the first one when I googled and it still makes my point). Wrasses solely feed on dead skin and mucous of fish (google "obligate feeders") and even though they are eating in your tank they are not actually deriving sustenance (nutritional value) from the food they eat so you are condemming your wrasse to a substantially shortened lifespan. Gobies are facultative cleaners (google it) and are able to eat other foods when cleaning other fish isn't an option. So really in the grand scheme you probably will have the goby live longer than the wrasse and since they are both about the same price you actually get more bang for the buck with the goby. As for wrasses jumping you must be kidding or relying on the info from the store that sold you the wrasse?...I have yet to hear of a species of wrasse that isn't at risk of jumping.
You say you haven't seen a neon goby in a store from here to TO and I would urge you to look at the post from eco-reefer a couple months back (they have them) and I can send you links to many decent stores that care about their customers and livestock will only sell cleaner gobies and even more to stores that still sell cleaner wrasses but put a big disclaimer with an information sheet attached like this one
http://animal-world.com/encyclo/marine/wrasses/information/CleanerWrassesInTheAquarium.php.
FYI stores that sell cleaner wrasses as a viable solution are either not very well informed or are crooked and banking on newbies to come back and buy another fish when theirs croak. You even admit you've had 3 so what does that say? Sorry to break it to you....Just cause something is in the store does not mean it is meant for our tanks and it is our job to research our purchases so that less than decent collection practices cease. If there isn't an end market (thats you) for the fish then stores will stop buying and collectors will stop harvesting.
As for it being proven that tangs always carry Ich I will only ask that you send me the link or research paper as I have yet to read this myself. I never said my fish had Ich just that they got a few spots from time to time. I was very careful with what I said as I have never lost a fish or had to treat for a confirmed case of Ich.
Now for your final "point" you allude to locking ourselves up when we get sick and I believe it's what is referred to as a "sick day"! This is our way of QT'ing ourselves in order to keep our disease to ourselves. Diseases such as the cold and flu derive great benefit from people that ignore these desires to lay in bed and sleep (AKA QT'ing themselves). Specific Gravity and o2 are in no way relative to one another....You can have water low in sg that is still capable of sustaining life (just ask in the tiny little freshie section here).
