You can always run carbon passively in one of those mesh bags. It is not as aggressive at removing things from the water as if you ran it with water flowing through it. But it does work just at a slower rate. Fill the bag to what you need and put it in the sump or wherever you want it.

This may sound stupid, but would it be a bad idea to put the carbon in a filter sock and put it on the main drain? Or would that just cause the filter socks to constantly overflow???
