Has anyone used multichip LEDs?
I have been looking around and have been curious about 100watt multi chip LEDs with a 120 degree lens.

Just wondering if anyone has seen them around?
Here is a pic from The Coral Reef Shop in Burlington..

These are actually 145w from a thread on RC...http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=22013769#post22013769

I have been advised that these are the way to go, but haven't seen any longterm outcome or results with any sps growers.

Let me know what you guys think?

Probably get the same spread as a DE metal halide, Doesn't look like they can have enough cooling in that can unless there is a fan in it, 100w chip will get pretty hot. I think you can get multi spectrum chips as well.

I think they run with cpu fans and it seems to keep them very cool. It is recommended to go with the 100 watt instead of the 50 watt so they can be dimmed down, keeping things cooler and prolonging the life of the unit.

I read that "Mr. Wilson" from the Coral Reef Shop used this type of LEDs when he did the lighting for the new Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto. Pretty cool!

I have had my eye on the 100w 5.1 channel lumina I think it's called. It is dimmeable on each channel and each chip has multiple colours so you can fine tune your colour temp. They also go for only $100 and apparently you can get 24X24 spread for 1. I priced them out with makers led heatsinks and meanwell drivers which are quite small and even though there are 5/board you can mount them on a through hole perf board to keep things tidy. Would cost about $700 to make 2 100w fixtures fully customizeBle and fully dimmeable. Can't beat that IMO  ;D

Looks pretty sweet, that is for sure.  Sort of reminds me of the look people get that run those solar tubes, with actual "real" light from the outside world.

Check out the above links: the actual manufacturers site and then where they sell them at wholesale prices ($30 less than LGB) plus its fre shipping.

That would drop the cost of a double chip build by atleast $80 and then you could get cheaper heatsinks and save a little more...

That's my concern...who knows if the output on these things is anywhere good enough for lps much less sps.  I think it would be fantastic in a business sign or room mood lighting but I don't think I'd plunk it over a bunch of coral and hope it's full spectrum.... just my thoughts.

Plus man it's gotta be hard on that circuit board no matter what kind of cooling its got.

True that

Did these just come out?

I think they did, I just placed an order with them the other week and only saw the total spectrum violet UV they had listed. Didn't buy it but looked interesting  :)

with hydro rates in Ontario going up and up and up, thinking it might be time to do some serious led inquiries, and turn in the metal halides.
So many brands, changes all the time, enough to make your head spin.
Glad you guys are on top of this gonna zip it, and sit back and learn. :-X
