I know what the common opinion is on the chocolate chip star (not reef safe whatsoever), but has anyone actually had one to prove or disprove?

In general I usually put a lot of faith into what this site says

I've had a chocolate chip starfish for over 3 years, but I have simple or most soft corals and anenomes, and a huge Kenya tree, zoas, leathers, it has never  bothered any of these. Just sayin, don't know about LPS or SPS, they may be a tasty snack

So it is possible!  Was on the fence about taking one offered to me for free.  Guess i'll take a chance and see what happens.
