So in the last 8 months I've been trying to keep zoas , cheap ones and also even tried some sunny d zoas , and they all died off within weeks the heads wouldn't even open for me , that was in my 20 gallon tank under fluval leds 25w marine and reef .

So I switched my 20 gallon over to a 40 gallon tank and 2 days ago while I was out and about I found a really nice pally for sale , and I thought to my self same family = same issue ... So I bit the bullet and bought a small pice with healthy looking heads dropped it when I got home and it looks awesome very happy it's been open for a day and a half now ! .

So my point is .. Why so many issues with the zoas ? And not pally ..? Not just a little difference a big one Interms of it not shedding and being closed up .. If I can keep a pally can I keep zoas ?

Have you tried zoa's in the new tank? We need Dr Eric to chime in here.. now what is the difference between the two..I have always been told that its basically its just the size, this is still a learning curve for me..

Don't forget. Those palys you have are the weeds of a reef. They are like dandelions on your lawn. Look nice but you can't kill me even if you tried.

Also be for warned if and when you are ever handling them make sure you have on gloves. As I have been told they can be poisonous even fatal to humans.

Not just the size, as some Zoanthids can be larger as well.

The real difference between Zoas and Palys are hard to distinguish. It's actually in the tissue that makes up the "mat". The stuff that holds the zoas or palys to the rock, called coenenchyme(*sp*). Palythoa's take up small particles like sand to help build their "mat" and stem structures and Zoas do not.

It's not as easily distinguishable as one might think. But you can usually see on the stem just under the oral disk that Palythoas usually have a texture to them because they use the particles to make up some of their tissue.

At least that's what I've been told lol ;)

Well let me put it this way the kessil is for the coral side and the fluval leds are just for light on other half of tank

. I just tried zoas in my 20 gallon for 5 months with no luck and I just had the 40 gallon set up for a week and a day now it's doing great so I haven't tried another Zoa after my last just died in. My old tank before the switch over to the 40 .. So 2 days ago I got my 1st paly and it looks great

I have always manhandled my zoas without any I'll effects??? I know they are poisonous though but as per when dealing with any corals... wash your hands afterwards... I guess if you used them as garnish on a burger and ate them the poison could harm you lol :) it is advisable to use Goggles when fragging them as coral tend to squirt when chopped up and if the nasties get in your eyes you will have some serious issues.

Goodluck explaining to the doc how you got zoanthads juice in your eyes lol

I have had a fish that would eat only zoas too, never touched palys bit loved the old zoas...
