I recently picked up a zoa frag that had a decent amount of hair algae on it. Not a huge amount but it was certainly noticeable. I figured that the zoas would just open up and the algae would eventually go away. Well the zoas opened but the algae seemed to also enjoy my tank. So as it appeared the algae was growing I looked for a solution online and found several threads about water/peroxide dipping. After a fair bit of searching and reading and a bit of hesitation I decided to try it.
I filled a plastic deli cup with 3/4 tank water and 1/4 Hydrogen Peroxide 3%. I put the frag in and let it sit for 5 minutes. I saw a bit of bubbling on the algae but nothing crazy. I rinsed the frag off in a small container with a bit of tank water and put it back in the tank. The next day one zoa was slightly open and there may have been a small amount of algae gone but it wasn't instantly noticeable. However today (the second day after the dip) I look in my tank and all of the algae seems to be gone from the frag. Even the plug is white again. And both zoa polyps are open and seem to be doing fine.
Maybe this is common knowledge but I wasn't sure how to get rid of the algae easily. This method seemed to work great for me so I thought I'd share in case others have zoa plugs with algae on them. I will certainly post again if any negative effects arise but everything looks good for now.
Also from my reading it seems that zoas are one of a few corals that can handle this dip. Apparently some corals don't take too kindly to it. So if you'd like to dip another type of coral in the peroxide mixture I would definitely do some research first.
