any thoughts or comments are apprciated.
i am getting a wee bit of green hair algae on the overflow and the return, but i put the gfo in the phosban 150 online a couple days ago, hoping that will help.

im having issue tumbling my pellets as well. Im finding that in that large reactor only the outsides of the pellets are tumbling and the inside of the reactor close to the pipe their hardly tumbling atal.

not sure but have you ever seen a mod cone for your biopellet? if your having problem with the inside tumbling then you either need a stronger pump or modding it with a cone. With the algae you gotta give the gfo more then a few days to work also keep adding small amounts of gfo weekly if you notice you still have lots of algae in your tank, you just have to your gfo sweet spot by testing p04 and observing.

do you have a link to building/adding a modded cone like that?
i actually have the biopellets in a vertex aquastick reactor, plumbed off my mag 18 return, theres alot of tumble its just not spread evenly, so maybe the cone mod would help...

Been awhile since an update

Everything is doing great!
My livestock is currently :

1 yellow tail damsel
Flame angel
Bi colour angel
Naso tang
Mandarine dragonette
2 large breeding pair of clowns
1 sand sifting star


Corals :

Hammer
Frogspawn
Elegance
Huge bubble coral hosted by the clowns
Green slimmer
Few unknown sps frags doing well
Green and pink monti cap
Acan frag doing well
Alien eye chalice doing well

Here's my schedule

I've been doing a 25g water change every other week and going to stick to that religiously.

Every 2 days I fill up the ato

I'm wondering when I should swap my gfo out? Tanks been running for almost 2 months now.

I'm going to top up my bio pellets soon boosting the 'dose' to half the recommended amount.

I am have a bit of an issue with diatoms.  They haven't really gone away since I started. All other algae are min. I had a wee bit of hair algae at the beginning but gfo cleared that up quick.
But back to the diatoms , what should I do about them? There the worst on the sand.
I have 2 Cerriths and 7 nassarius and a sand sifting star to keep things moving.

I also took a pic of the bubbles in the sand. I've been doing research and asking a few people and reportedly there fine, I just have to leave and not disturb them and then they will go away..

Hi Brandon:

From what I have gathered, the diatoms are a natural part of New Tank Syndrome.  That being said, I hate the look of it.  I picked up some Trochus snails from Sealife Central for my reef tank a few months ago (started the tank in June) and havent had any diatoms accumulate since.  They are great little snails.  Just make sure you get self-righting ones.  The self righting ones have a black body and the shell is striped.  Hope this helps

Just leave it alone and it will kill itself off. I know its ugly, but, it is the least problematic of all the algaes. Ones it consumes the silicas in the sand, it will disappear.

+1...as long as your RO system is good so you aren't constantly supplying fresh silicates for the diatoms to build their skeletons...

Well I got a Hanna phosphate checker the other day,
Tank is reading 0.04 ppm for phosphate. And I did my scheduled 25g water change right after that.

Those meters (like any other test kit) have an acurracy range of +/- 0.03 so keep that in mind.

As for GFO. Use less and swap it out monthly vs. Using a lot and not changing it for months. The sponges get really clogged so monthly cleaning will ensure peak flow through the reactor.

Thanks for the tip, that does sound like it will work.
And in those tlf 150's, those sonogram clog easily, I run my biopellets in a tlf 150 spliced off my return pump which has a foam prefilter on it and i find that really helps with clogging... Maybe ill do the same for the gfo.
