Power Is Out Now :(

Our building and the surrounding have been with no power for 45 minutes now. I have Ecotech battery back up powering one of two MP10s in my 40 gallons tanks, and that is it. I also have QT 10 gallons tank with 2 fishes (yellow tail damsel and yellow clown goby) in it.
Few minutes ago the temperature readings on both tanks is somewhere around 77 degrees F.

How much longer I have before the temperatures drop to dead zone? Room temperature is reading at 75F now.

I am thinking the QT tank temperature will drop faster than my DT tank. If the time come might have to cut the QT short and transfer the 2 fishes into DT to save them, but then again I am risking my 2 clowns in DT. Hard choice.

Do you guys have any tips for me?

One thing I saw online, was if you have access to hot water (gas stove or coffee shop down the street) was to fill a plastic bottle with the hot water and let it float in the tank. I used to drape towels and blankets over and around my tanks to help trap heat inside.

Do not feed the fish, they can last days as I'm sure you know. To keep temperature stable, you can warp the tank in blankets, as glass is a bad insulator. For oxygen, an air stone actually gives little to no oxygen. Get a cup and scoop some water out and pour it back in.The most important part of concern during a power outage is the filtration system. Remove the biowheels and submerge them in the tank. Filter media in trickle filters can be placed in a mesh bag and placed in the tank as well, or you can pour water over the media in regular hourly intervals. Found the last part about filtration on a site. Hope this helps, good luck :)

I can't run outside to get hot water as I am home with my sleeping child.

I just fed the fish tonight and was planning to do WC on the QT tank tonight until this happened.

This use to happen to me atleast 3 times a week.. for about 6 months , average was about 2-3 hours sometimes 14-18 hours all I do is keep some sort of water flow (I never had battery back ups) I just did the old scoop and pour , temp drop to about 72 but everyhing seemed ok . Haven't had any issue since I moved out of the area , good luck !

Do you have any prime on hand, if so you can use it during extended outage to bind the ammonia, as long as the power head running the bacteria have oxygen to take care of it but the process slows down as the temp drops. as said above wrap the tank in a blanket and if needed use a cup to keep the tank aerated if your battery back up die's. cold water holds more O2

Can you share the battery back up info? How long it will last to run a 150W heater only?

Just be aware that the water flow is more important then a temperature drop during a temp outage. If I where you I'd look into a back up for your power heads instead of heaters.

I have ecotech battery back up already for DT but nothing for QT. I also would like to find battery back up for heaters now

I bought my son this battery backup for Xmas:
APC BR1500G BACK-UPS RS 1500 10-Outlet 1500VA/865W UPS System

I got it at amazon.ca for $229 plus taxes, as we were in a hurry to get it before we went away.

did you test it to see how long it will run a single heater?
