Question of the day

I feed both the 1mm sinking pellets and the optimum flakes.  All the fish go nuts for both.  I think I prefer to use the flakes because if I take a pinch and let it go just under the surface of the water, it disperses through the tank very nicely and everyone can get their fill.  With the pellets, if I drop them on the surface they seem to take a long time to start sinking, and will quickly go down the overflow if I don't drop them in the correct place.  But if I pinch them and drop slightly below surface, they sink waaay to fast, and just end up as worm food.

SO I typically just drop a few pellets on the surface in a place where I know they'll be stuck until they sink, and then put a pinch of flake in the water.  Most of the food gets eaten fairly quickly and nobody has to fight.

What do use use to get the pellets in the mouth? I tried last night and made a mess, but i didnt have the pumps off.

turning them off will make a huge difference. I get a cup, scoop up some tank water, drop the pellets into the cup, and then suck them up with the water with a turkey baster from the dollar store, and then I can target feed into their mouths. I do the same with frozen brine/mysis shrimp and cyclopeze.

But yeah, turning off your pumps or setting them to feeding mode makes a huge difference so the food actually goes where I want it too rather then being blown all over the tank in a free for all.

I take a pinch of them and stick my arm in, then sorta grind my fingers together like I'm sprinkling salt on something to drop the pellets into the LPS mouths.  Probably not the best way, as I sometimes make a mess and drop pellets elsewhere (see picture), but it seems to work.

I swirl them in a cup until they're all wet, then suck that up with a 50cc syringe (or a turkey baster) and blow it directly into the "mouths".  Pumps on, as long as their feeding peni are out they will stick.  Same procedure for mysis shrimp.

I find when i blow them the peni retract, am i doin it to hard?

Seriously the pressure from the turkey bastor causes them to close up. Maybe i need to just keep doing it and they will learn.
