I have a ball of cheato and a BRS modded single full of biopellets... I cant measure any nit or phos.  no gfo no carbon.  I have it just don't run it.

But I probably need new test kits as well   have no issues with algae anywhere

Very true.  Not to mention the rate of flow through the refugium should be quite slow to be really effective.  So people with big return pumps shouldn't bother running one.  I run a cryptic zone in my sump and it seems to work.  Tons of crazy sponges....I assume the feed on something.  Lots of flow moving though it though.
