do you mean aqua vitro fuel or a different brand? i use aqua vitro fuel but only a half dose.... and put it in the fridge after opening or it goes bad
yes,will last for months unrefrigerated

c/p: from http://www.aquavitro.com/support.html#fuel
Q: I just noticed that my bottle of fuel says to refrigerate after opening. Is my bottle bad since I have not done so?
A: It is perfectly fine to not refrigerate this product. Refrigeration is recommended if the product will be kept for several months. Depending on how long you will be using the bottle for, you may consider refrigerating it to keep the nutrients intact. If you will use up the bottle within only a couple months, you can just keep it at room temperature.

Mine stays on a shelf in the basement nice and cool there..... it gets a very skunky smell if it goes bad.... you will notice a huge difference.

Fuel contains not only amino and fatty acids but trace elements as well like boron iron and strontium.... if your getting diatoms it sounds more like you stirred up too much sandbed at once or added some rock?
