Hey everyone.

Has anyone ever heard of a reef rescue organization? There seems to be a bunch of dog rescue agencies around, but what about our fishy friends... Or is it just the porcelain vortex...

I think everyone on this site is great with all of the help they offer. I've heard of members jumping to help with tank ruptures and algae out breaks. Corals and all kinds of fish have been saved. All of which shows how great you guys and gals are. What I was thinking of was the "I wanna Nemo" crowd.... you know, the ones who don't do the research, and come down with a case of the "Now what?"s. Has anyone ever gone to a Vet office to say "If you get a call, here's my card..." Think of all the creatures that could be saved if everyone in an area got together and had a QT when needed. Not to mention free fish and corals...

I've seen 2 Salt water tanks at road side this spring clean up. As far as I know there are only 2 forum members that live in this town. BTW the tanks were so nasty looking I wasn't even going to make an attempt to bring them home ( one still had the sand and some water in it).

It's worth a thought. Or at least some discussion.:)

Great idea! You setup a few dozen tanks in your basement. Then I'll bring over stuff I don't want and then later drop by and see if there is any stuff I'd like to borrow for a month or two :)

No. I was thinking more along the line of, someone wants to get rid of the fish they don't know how to look after, They call a vet to see if they can do something and the vet recommends they call _______. Who ever does this goes over to the house, picks up the fish/corals/tank/etc and then finds a new home with a competent person. I'm no baby(fish) sitter. Personally I don't have enough knowledge.

The other example I thought of is: A long time reefer "passes to the great tank in the sky" and his/her family wants nothing to do with this expensive hobby. What then? Well, call in reef rescue and have it taken away. With or with out purchase. At least it keeps the house from being stunk up with dead livestock... Then it could be put up for sale with proceeds to the family or a charity.

Again just thinking. Another year or two and I might consider assisting. I have lots to learn until then.

I agree with the concept but, it would be really hard to implement... plus, to educate the public would be a chore...there are so many ppl out there with the pea brain attitude " they are just fish"...
What I think would be a good idea is to offer a mentorship to anyone that is thinking of getting a tank, either fresh or sw.....

what is that old saying " you can lead a horse to water but, you can't make them drink"

my 2nd rant for the day...

SeaLife Central offers to take unwanted fish AND will pay you IIRC. The staff over there will help anyone out. I have a feeling that if they were contacted to take a tank from a deceased hobbiest, they would do it and do it well.
