Reef Safe Eel? Fish Safe Eel?

I had a snowflake and it didn't bother inverts, but they're known to eat shrimp and crabs. However it did eat my damsel(I was very happy! ), so I recommend keeping one with larger fish.

If you've got the room, i recommend you get a zebra eel. Mine was a model citizen. Only ate what i fed it.

my snowflake eel is a model citizen as well. he doesnt touch my hermits or mithrax crabs. long as you add your shrimp a few months before the eel they will be fine too. I WISH MINE WOULD EAT MY DAMSELS

I have a 90 gallon currently with 2 ocellaris clowns a fire fish a Yellow watchman goby 1anthias and 1 tomini tang so far hoping to add a powder blue tang a yellow tang mandarin and few other fish soon.

May be safe with snails, it really depends on the eel.

mine doesnt harm snails or crabs but im sure if you let him get hungry enough he would have a go. i only feed mine a chunk of shrimp or clam or squid half the size of my thumb cut samller once a week. he is about 18" long and nearly an inch thick but there is always a chance. he ignores the shrimp completely as well.

So well fed is the key? Sounds good. Big difference in price between the 2 morays Snowflake is more friendly for my pockets but have been told by a few of our lfs's that the zebra is a better citizen but both can be.

Definitely feed more then less! They have a very large bioload! Steve is a great guy and knows what he's talking about, but his eel is strange...it defies all the rules of being an eel lol!
Make sure there is no where for him to escape aswell!

he took a slide down the overflow once so i just spanked him sent him to his room(cave) and told him if he did it again he would be made into a decoration lol dont feed too much as impaction is their main cause for death.

When I had jeffs eel, I use to have to feed it whole shrimp and clams using a long handled tweezer. Keep in mind that things like eels are very specific feeding creatures and therefore you need to make sure food is available to you at all times, shrimp is easy to find, clams not so much. And they do tend to be more expensive to feed then say your common flake or pellet eating fish are.

Nope. Would occasionally swim up in a corner until his nose broke the water surface, then swim back down and carry on.

if you bounce food in and out of the surface watch out..... but by doing so he will now go after your finger everytime you reach in lol they are not stupid.... well some are

If you have your hang in the tank don you have to worry about them trying to bit your hand or arm?

I always fed with tongs, so he never really cared when I had my hands in the tank. I always kept track of where he was though. After seeing him crush clams, i have no doubt he could have severely mangled a finger.
