Rehabbing RODI unit

I have had an RODI unit for 6 months (or more....probably more) and am finally getting around to seeing how it works.  I will have some questions for sure.

It has 4 canisters and the RO on top.

First, I unscrewed the canisters, took out the filters (looks like the DI is in reusable containers) and soaked in light bleach for a day.  The first two have a nice brown tinge to them - the bleach didn't take that away.

I unscrewed the RO canister on top - the inside and the membrane look pretty brown.

A few questions:

- is it OK that the first couple of canisters have a brown tinge, or should I bleach more?
- is there a way to flush my RO membrane, or will I have to replace?  Not sure how to get it out of the canister either - seemed pretty tight
- there are some kinks in the hoses - I will have to learn how the little white connectors work and replace some sections (I will provide pictures at some point seeking advice)
- it looks like it goes:  canister, canister, RO, canister, canister.  Is that: filter, carbon, RO, DI, DI?  I bought a filter kit from BRS months ago, but didn't consider how to put it together.

[glow=red,2,300]yes the membrane should be flushed fairly often depending on how much water you are making. the membrane will pull out, it fits in there tightly with o-rings. U dont take it out to flush it. Basically what you do is bypass the flow restrictor so you are not making any ro water, its all going to waste. and let it run like that for 15-20 minutes[/glow]

Not sure on your other questions but the sediment (1st filter) is supposed to be replaced once it's visually dirty.
Helps prolong the life of your other filters.

If you end up ordering your bulbs at brs they sell the 5stage filter replacement kit for around $20-25 (group buy price) includes 1 sediment, 2 carbon, and the di media.

I know the filters need to be changed, but the canisters that screw on and hold the filters were the ones I bleached.  The two that held the DI are clear, but the other two are still brown after bleaching.

Ya, I ordered that 5 stage filter kit - but it looks like it is set up for sediment, carbon, DI, DI instead of sediment, carbon, carbon, DI - since it goes 2 canisters, RO, 2 canisters.

Not sure how to bypass the RO....and I don't have a way to hook it up to the supply yet, I suppose I will have to do that at some point!

Depending on how your hooking it into your water supply I may have a spare part for ya.
BRS send me a pack load of connections / etc, and currently i'm only using the hose adapter.
(Not sure if all RO units use basically the same hoses to connect?)

The bleach treatment is just to kill off any mold or bacteria in the system, I do it just before I install the new filters and membranes.  Brown tinge doesn't matter at all, just means the filter is doing its job

Attaching to the water supply is usually with a self tapping saddle valve.  I've never seen one that didn't leak at the screw part of the valve after a while, but it's an easy way to hook up the water.  A better way is to cur the pipe and install a proper union for the unit, it also improves water pressure (less than I think 70psi and you need a booster pump to work right).

ah, that makes so much more sense lol...yea the discolouration on the canister is nothing to worry about.

as far as the flush valve heres a pic..u should have the flow restrictor already, u just need 2 T's and a valve

BRS sells a drop in kit, basically cut the line (in the right spot), put the flow restrictor in, and push it in place.  Doesn't look as fancy as that one though

It was easy to do once I read the instructions, there's just so many damn lines on some of these things.  I had to add in a pressure gauge and a flush kit, I was scratching my head bald.  ;D

No, I grabbed the other one, I have a spare DI stage I plan to add onto it.  It was RO only.

Ya, I was starting to feel like pulpfiction with all the misc equipment and unfinished projects in the basement - having an RO unit, and a RODI and still buying water was starting to seem a little silly.....

I am hoping to just screw it onto my laundry tub tap....have to see if I can pick up some hardware for that, I guess.  Hope the seals and connections are good....
