Return Pump

Hey Team

I was wondering how you judge what size of a return pump to get .... I was torn between a mag 18 or mag 24 ... I decided to go with the mag 24 .... but it got me thinking..

150 gallon tank 48*24*30 and a sump is 36*18*18 50 gallon ... Idk if that matters ...

the beauty of getting the larger pump is you can put a valve on the output anf throttle it back if need be

How much GPH is your overflow? If it is overkill you can always run a reactor off of it. That is what I do i run a manifold with ball valves so I can run mutable hardware off of one pump.

You could even manifold it and run GFO, Carbon and/or Pellets off of one single pump.

Are you planning to run a fuge in your sump? If you are, that might be a bit much to be passing through a fuge.

I run a mag 9 for a 48x24x24 tank, 48x18x18 frag tank and a 48x18x24 sump. But I specifically went smaller to reduce flow through my fuge to get the most out of it.

I run under 1000 gph through my sump. Less is more with a fuge

No. 1200 should be fine. You would have been ok with 2400, you just would have had to valve output.

That mag 24 is a monster and it is very loud. Make sure that you use either a rubber pad or a couple lengths of soft pvc under the mag 12. My mag 9 is brutal

Louder then some, but also quiter then some believe it or not lol.

Mag pumps are WORK horses. They love the hydro, but you won't have to worry about fish getting stuck in them, they make soup out of them!

No. 1200 should be fine. You would have been ok with 2400, you just would have had to valve output.
